    In honor of Women's History Month, “Ladies In the Shoe” Tap Conference is a celebration of accomplished female tap dance artists and well respected ambassadors of this art form. It will include classes for intermediate & advanced dancers, discussions with the artists, and 2 live shows. The purpose of this conference is to celebrate, encourage and empower female tap dancers to continue to thrive within the tap dance community and beyond. In celebration of Women’s History Month, the “Ladies in the Shoe” Tap Conference honors the legacy and artistry of accomplished female tap dancers and influential ambassadors of the form. Created and directed by award-winning tap dancer Dormeshia , t his event includes 2 days of classes, a Dance Party/Tap Jam and 2 live performances featuring Demi Remick, Claudia Rahardjanoto, Amanda Castro, Josette Wiggan, and Brenda Bufalino. Designed for intermediate and advanced tap dancers, ages 13+, the conference celebrates, inspires, and empowers women in tap to continue to thrive within the tap community and beyond.   • Amanda | LADIES IN THE SHOE

    Amanda Castro Associate Choreographer for Gypsy on Broadway, Glimmerglass Opera’s The House on Mango Street, and most recently seen performing in Jelly’s Last Jam at New York City Center, Amanda Castro is a Bessie award-winning Puerto Rican-American multidisciplinary artist rooted in rhythm. Featured on Dance Magazine's “25 to Watch”, Castro is a graduate of California Institute of the Arts where she studied under Glen Eddy of Nederlands Dans Theatre and Andre Tyson from the Ailey Company. At New York City Center, she has been a feature collaborative choreographer with Ayodele Casel in their piece “El Camino“ in Casels evening length work “Where We Dwell”. She is a founder and active performing company member in Soles of Duende, an all female percussive trio rooted in Tap (Amanda Castro) Kathak (Brinda Guha), and Flamenco (Arielle Rosales). Originally joining Urban Bush Women in 2013, she has toured all over the country and Europe for their 30th Anniversary tour and completed UBW’s 40th Anniversary “This Is Risk” tour this season. Amanda has gone on to star in musical theater and opera productions such as Singing In the Rain in the role of Kathy Seldon, Jared Grimes’ ensemble in 42nd Street, “atomic” performances as Anita in Glimmerglass Festival’s West Side Story (NYT) and Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Il Trovatore, among others. Commissioned for a short film investigating Cooperstown agricultural community entitled “On Trac|<“ Castro has worked for and collaborated on various projects with artists from around the country including Camille A. Brown, Justin Peck, Dormeshia, Julio Monge, Caleb Tiecher, Michael Heitz, Jared Grimes, Francesca Zambello, and many more. She’s been fortunate to work with innovative artists in the field and is constantly on the search to be a part of stories that help elevate our collective humanity. @acastrodance

    Performance Opportunity CALL FOR VIDEO SUBMISSIONS As part of the 7th year of the “Ladies in the Shoe” Tap Conference , Dormeshia Tap Collective and 92NY proudly present a live tap dance performance celebrating the artistry and achievements of women in tap, taking place at Buttenweiser Hall in NYC on March 5th & 6th. We invite female choreographers to submit choreography or improvography for consideration. While choreography must be created by women, dancers of all genders are welcome to perform and participate in the accompanying classes. Selected artists will have the opportunity to showcase their work as part of this special program, celebrating the extraordinary women whose contributions continue to shape and elevate the tap dance tradition. Selected dancers will also receive a $10 discount off the 2-day bundle. Submission deadline: January 9, 2026 Number of dancers: 1–8 dancers Performance length: 3–5 minutes Music: All genres welcome (no explicit lyrics) Video submission guidelines Create your video: The dancers in the video must be those performing the piece, if selected. Find a location with a wood floor, good lighting, and ample space for your routine. Ensure the camera angle captures your full body and showcases your footwork. Double-check that your tap sounds are clear and audible. Consider recording multiple takes to ensure the best quality. Footage from a previous performance is acceptable, as long as the tap sounds are clear. If you’d like to highlight a specific section, note the time code on the submission form. Upload your video: Upload your video to YouTube and mark it as “unlisted.” Grant access to “ladiesintheshoetapconference@gmail.com ” so we can view your submission. Copy and paste the unlisted YouTube link into the "Video Submission Form" when prompted . Note: Please make sure to include a YouTube link to view the video of dancers performing your choreography.   • Claudia | LADIES IN THE SHOE

    Claudia Rahardjanoto Born and raised in Berlin, Claudia Rahardjanoto started her professional dance career at the Deutsche Oper Berlin at the age of nine, before falling in love with tap dance at 15 under the tutelage of Sven Göttlicher and Marie-Christin Zeisset. Since moving to New York City in 2003 to continue and pursue her career in tap dance in the U.S., Rahardjanoto has worked with various tap dancers, choreographers and musicians, has been featured on the cover of Dance Teacher magazine and was included in Dance Magazine’s annual “25 to Watch” list. Currently, she tours both nationally and internationally with the Dorrance Dance, dances with Max Pollak’s Rumbatap, collaborates with jazz pianist Michael Jellick, and is honored to have worked with Allison Miller on Rivers in Our Veins since its creation in 2019. Rahardjanoto has been on faculty at the 92NY Harkness Dance Center since 2013 and hopes to continue to share her love and passion for the art of tap dance and music through her performing and teaching globally.

    Josette Wiggan An internationally acclaimed and much sought after educator/ choreographer/ performer, Josette Wiggan has dedicated her life to the perpetuation American Jazz and other various Social Dances like Tap, Lindy Hop and Hip Hop. She began her dance adventure with Paul and Arlene Kennedy at the Universal Dance Designs Studio in Los Angeles. Her love for performing was fostered by the Kennedys and then refined as an adult while dancing with Jazz Tap Ensemble until 2007. A graduate of UCLA, Josette’s career highlights include, the 2001 Spotlight Award winner in non- classical dance category, the first National Broadway Tour of 42nd Street, 2008 Bessie Award Nominee for Outstanding Performance in the Baker/Tarpaga Project, studying with Germaine Acogny at L’ecole les Sables in Dakar, Senegal and movies Idlewild, Princess and the Frog, and The Bride. Alongside her brother, Joseph Wiggan, she was part of two original casts of Cirque du Soleil’s Banana Shpeel and Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour from 2009-2013. The duo performed in Tireless, a curated show by Michelle Dorrance that had its debut at Jacob’s Pillow in 2017 and in 2021, Josette created her first evening length work entitled, Praise: The Inevitable Fruit of Gratitude, in collaboration with Grammy nominated, jazz trumpeter Keyon Harrold and the cast of Dorrance Dance. Josette is also co-creator with Michelle Dorrance and Hannah Heller for a Christmas work entitled, ...The Nutcracker Suite... that has premiered at houses including the Joyce Theater, Kennedy Center, The White House (under the invitation of First Lady Jill Biden,) and The Soraya. Most currently, Josette began her own tap company, Josette Wiggan Presents... and developed new works entitled, On Solid Ground: A Celebration of Black Joy and Freedom In Our America, featuring improvisation by the dancers and musicians, and her first solo work, Threshing Floor: A Place of Meditation and Melody, for the American Dance Platform 2024 at the Joyce Theater.Currently, Josette is on Faculty at USC | School of Dramatic Arts teaching Tap dance and Hip Hop. @josette_wiggan_taps

    Demi Remick Demi Remick is a tap dancer, choreographer, burlesque performer, and teacher. Demi has toured worldwide with Postmodern Jukebox and has acquired over 5 million views on her Super Mario Tap Medley YouTube video. She has danced for Dorrance Dance, Jason Samuels Smith, Derek Deane, and alongside the American Ballet Theatre and New York City Ballet principal dancers. She has performed in cabaret shows for Dita Von Teese, Spiegelworld, Quixotic Fusion, Company XIV, and Angie Pontani/Brian Newman. She has performed at venues such as The Sydney Opera House, The London Palladium, The Ryman Auditorium, Lincoln Center, Radio City Music Hall, The Kennedy Center, and Royal Albert Hall to name a few. She was Dance Magazine’s Top-25-To-Watch (2014), a YoungArts Gold winner (2013), a Capezio Athlete, and had a LaDuca 2024 LaSale Commemorative tap shoe made in her honor, The Retro. Demi has taught tap dance internationally, is on faculty at DanceMakers Inc., and earned her BFA in Dance from SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Dance. @demi_remi

  • Brenda | LADIES IN THE SHOE

    Brenda Bufalino As a soloist, and choreographer/director of The American Tap Dance Orchestra, Ms Bufalino has performed and taught Internationally for over 30 years. Her collaborations with her partner and mentor the great Charles ‘Honi’ Coles, and her many performances with Gregory Hines, The Nicholas Brothers, and the many giants of tap dance has infused her with the essence of the form that she now shares with her stories, teaching, and dances. Her own experimental work, with taps, electronics and poetry has influenced the next two generations of tap artists, and she is still creating new experimental and traditional tap works and performances. She has performed solo and with her company “The American Tap Dance Orchestra” at all the major venues; including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, The Joyce Theater, and a new work "On the Mobius loop w/ Mingus," premiered at the Guggenheim Museum in 2025. With her company she appeared in the PBS special Tap Dance in America...with Gregory Hines. The NEA deemed two of her choreographies for the ATDO, American Masterpieces. Her choreography has been reconstructed and performed by several noted companies, most recently her piece "Jump Monk," was performed by Dorrance Dance at City Center, NYC. She has three published books: the memoir "Tapping the Source...Tap dance, stories, theory and practice" and a book of poems "Circular Migrations" and her recent novella "Song of the Split Elm." @brenda.bufalino

    Dormeshia Dormeshia’s journey in tap dance is a remarkable testament to her exceptional talent and dedication. Born with rhythm in her veins, she has become a celebrated figure, earning the title "queen of tap" from The New York Times. Her accolades include the Doris Duke Artist Award, the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award, and the Bessie Award for Outstanding Creator/Choreographer for Rhythm is Life, among others. Dormeshia's electrifying performance in Broadway's After Midnight garnered her an Astaire Award for Best Female Performer. As a choreographer and educator, Dormeshia has significantly contributed to the art form. Her choreography for Jelly’s Last Jam at New York City Center received rave reviews, and her full-length work, And Still You Must Swing, was recognized as one of the "Best of Dance" by The New York Times. Dormeshia is also the producer of the Ladies in the Shoe Tap Conference, celebrating women in tap dance, and co-directs the Jacob’s Pillow Tap Program, nurturing the next generation of dancers. She is also an adjunct faculty member at Barnard College, where she teaches tap dance, further solidifying her role as an influential educator in the field. Beyond the stage, Dormeshia has influenced popular culture, having been the tap instructor for Michael Jackson. Her legacy is immortalized in the Forever Collection of U.S. Postage Stamps. Dormeshia continues to inspire through her artistry, pushing the boundaries of tap while honoring its rich traditions. @dormeshia
